      Entrevista para Java Software Engineer

Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 3 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Vodafone (Londres, Inglaterra) en oct 2018

      Entrevista

This was logistically a very poor interview process and at all stages, it felt as though Vodafone thought they were doing me a favour by speaking to me. The first stage was a phone screen; I was called at the arranged time. As I stepped out of the room to take the call, the phone stopped ringing. I immediately called back (no more than 20 seconds after my phone started ringing) but didn't get an answer. The call was then rearranged to another date and went reasonably well. However, it felt like the interviewer was trying discourage me from proceeding. I had mentioned in my cover letter something generic like "I enjoy solving interesting problems" and he told me that most of the problems I would be solving wouldn't be interesting, and that I would primarily be working with outdated technology. After this, I received a job specification by email containing a salary range which was half of what was advertised online. When I questioned it, I was assured that it was a mistake. The next stage was a video interview. This went well, although it was clear that the interviewer was doing nothing more than simply reading out a preset list of questions and writing down my answers. The final stage was an in person interview and presentation. I arrived at the office on time but unfortunately was left standing in the lobby for 20 minutes because the interviewers were late. Again, they appeared to be reading a list of questions and writing down my answers. I found it difficult to connect with them - it felt like they weren't at all invested in the process. Throughout all three stages, the only technical question I was asked was "What is the difference between virtualisation and containerisation?" in the first phone call. All 4 of the interviewers I spoke to were non-technical HR and management, none of whom had any engineering experience. It seemed like an interview process for a generic management job, not a software engineering role. It would be completely possible to get offered a software engineering job here without any programming skills at all. On the plus side, I was given extensive and reasonable feedback afterwards, which I really appreciated.
