      Entrevista para Analyst

Me postulé a través de un reclutador. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Yammer (San Francisco, CA) en ene 2011

      Entrevista

A recruiter contacted me and arranged a phone screen, which consisted mostly of brain teaser questions. She talked really fast, but I still got the questions right and moved on. For my in person interview, I met with 4 or 5 people, Some asked me general technical questions (statistics), some had me do Google-type brain teaser questions. They introduced me to unplanned people which I took as a good sign. I thought this was the last step, but I got a contact saying they wanted me to meet with some new people. Instead I met with many of the same people, and 2 of the key upper-level people they wanted me to meet were unavailable. I was expecting a response but I was told that those 2 people really wanted to meet with me. They arranged a 6 pm meeting on a Friday since I'd taken 2 days off work for my other two "final" interviews. One of them met with me, and that was fine, but the other never became available... even though I waited around with him until 8 pm at night. The next week I heard I didn't get the job. Overall I felt really disappointed that they wasted my time on the third in-person interview, and I felt annoyed that the steps kept getting extended despite being told I was at the final stage. The people at Yammer are clearly smart and driven, but recognize now that I wasn't a great cultural fit, and I wish they'd just cut the interview process off earlier before using up all my days off. My recruiter contact was really nice and gave me some feedback on the decision, which I really appreciated.

The test includes six questions and has a time limit of 20 minutes. Once you register for the test, the timer begins immediately so please ensure you set aside a full 20 minutes for this. The first four questions are short answer. Question 5 has one correct answer, but requires a one- or two-sentence explanation. The last question is open-ended, and good answers are typically a couple paragraphs long. You may skip between questions throughout the test, so if you are stuck, feel free to move on and come back to that question later.

What is the expected value of rolling a 6-sided die. The sum of two prime numbers is 999. What is the higher of these two numbers? I went out to dinner last night and discovered that I charged $50.40 in total for my meal. Tax is 5%, and I always I tip 20% of the meal + tax amount. If 60% of the cost of my meal was my entree, how much did I spend on the entree? You walk into a Las Vegas casino. There are 10 slot machines. 9 of them win 20% of the time. 1 of them, the lucky machine, wins 30% of the time. But you don't know which one is the lucky one (the 30% winner). You watch someone put a quarter into the machine and win. What is the chance it was the "lucky" machine? Two players, A and B are rolling a fair die. Whoever rolls 5 first wins. A plays first and then B. What is the probability that A wins? Please discuss. Do you think there is any unfair advantage for any player in this game?

HR phone screen followed by another phone screen with an analyst followed by the WORST in person interview ever. 5 people, one at a time, over the course of 2.5 hours.

The whole thing was awful. They were testing to see how far they could push me before I broke. I know this because one of the interviewers actually said that to my face. After 2.5 hours of being asked to do math nonstop, I broke. The job description listed experience in Excel and SQL and I was not asked about my experience at all. I was asked were brainteasers and probability questions, LOTS of probability questions. The worst was when I was asked to derive a formula. As I was working through the problem, the next interviewer entered the room. He said "You're having her do that?" And both the interviewers laughed. I knew at that point I did not want to work at this company, regardless of receiving a job offer or not. A bunch of elitist snobs.

The first two rounds were very quick and simple brainteasers. Moved very quickly. In person round was a whole different story. When I showed up, the hiring manager was not available to start the first round, so the recruiter said it'd be a few minutes, but it ended up being more like 20 minutes. Mostly brainteasers, but you can't mess up and need more than one try to answer a question. There was one analyst on the team who was really aggressive and seemed like she didn't want me to do well almost. It was strange. The other analysts seemed pretty interesting and nice. Worst part? Recruiter said she'd get a decision to me in two days and then I heard nothing. I had to email and call multiple people after waiting most of the day before getting a short and generic no thanks email. You couldn't have sent that without all this prodding?
