      Entrevista

I got several emails from them notifying me that I was selected for an online interview which is funny because I don't remember applying or giving out my email address to them. I guess they liked the look of me from some online teacher website that I am on and went from there. I filled out the online survey monkey form only to be told that on the last page, their scheduling system could not book an appointment because 'We couldn't find anyone matching this link, double check the address or contact the business for a new link of where to go to book your appointment'. This was a big red flag of how unorganized they are. Still, I received daily emails from vipkid to book my interview and give a 'demo class'. Out of curiosity, I booked the interview. I still got emails from them. After going through the interview process, I realized that halfway through the interview this job would not be for me as I am an experienced and certified teacher with over 10 years of experience (6 years of which I was IN BEIJING teaching) and because they were selling a gimmick and were EXTREMELY unprofessional and unorganized in doing it. "Thank you so much for your offer! But no thanks!" Would be what I am saying if your interviewer understood reported speech. Which probably isn’t the case. I don’t think I will get into whether or not he understood the questions and answer to questions about teaching practice, curriculum design or your business model and approach to stakeholders because it would be embarrassing. It’s not like I expect someone to have even business level competence in a second language, but being able to answer questions like “how do you measure success” is important on both a general educational level and, you know, for any service business. Really. The interviewer was about an IELTS 4.0 - unable to deal with basic questions (we are talking standard interview stuff that you could easily have a crib sheet for but which he just blanked) and completely unable to interact within the lesson or the interview in general. Questions he could not answer, 'What sets this online tutoring company apart from others that may pay higher?', 'How popular is this method of education in China?', 'How do you deal with technical issues?', 'Do you find this method of ESL teaching effective? What are the success rates?' There were other questions that I had but he refused to answer them. I don’t think it is particularly sensible to have people who don’t have education related qualifications and whose English language level is below that which would be required to study for such qualifications in an English medium program interviewing prospective English teachers. Put simply, how would they know if they are any good? Here’s a challenge: next time you visit an office in China, speak to an interviewer and ask them to explain the terminology in the rubric. The interviewer could have helped himself a little by preparing for the interview, which he didn’t do. It took a while, and a lot of repetitive questioning for him to grasp the fact that, even though I am caucasian and American, I live in Malyasia. This is something he could have grasped from my application. Where that is repeatedly stated. By the way, i can say from experience that both the gaokao and the CET4 (daxueyingwensi) exams place a great deal of emphasis on reading - if this guy had made it to College in China then he should (notionally) possess the necessary reading skills to take the information from a simple form (what is that, CEFR A2?) However, for whatever reason, this guy chose not to do so and instead repeatedly assumed I was in the USA. My point is that it’s not hard, but it still was’t done. I would have liked to decline the offer given to me but there was no where to withdraw my application online, so I just let it expire. STILL, they emailed me and called me on my phone. I could barely hear him because I believe he was calling from skype in China and the sound was so muffled. Word to the wise: if you have an online business in China, make sure the internet works (it won't). Anyway, after living and teaching for 6 years in China, I have a pretty good hunch that this business won't last that long.

South Africans, don't waste your time or energy. They are just doing data collection on you, you won't actually get hired. The company is unprofessional and nationalistic. There are many better employing companies that treat applicants and employees respectfully.

I applied online and had one mock interview. I prepared for the interview by reading the slides and watching YouTube videos. I went around the house grabbing props and a white board.

Very thorough. Helpful links and resources available through application and searching youtube videos. 1st step Demo Video - to get a understanding of a persons personality 2nd step Mock 1 Class - teaching a lesson for a low level and higher level student 3rd step Mock 2 Class - depending on how Mock 1 went determines if you will have to do this step
