      Entrevista para Teacher

Me postulé a través de una recomendación de un empleado. El proceso tomó 4 días. Acudí a una entrevista en VIPKid (Los Angeles, CA) en abr 2017

      Entrevista

I was referred to this job via someone working at the company. I filled out the online application and was contacted immediately for an interview. I selected my timeslot and looked over the materials made available to me. While things seemed pretty straightforward during the referral/application process, as I read over the materials provided, it started to seem like a sizeable chunk of my time was needed to prepare. I was a bit stumped by how incongruous this seemed. In hindsight, that was my first red flag. I read over my teaching materials and used the dry erase board I had in my apartment for practice. In another sort of "huh?" moment, the powerpoint mock teaching deck told us to use one but it wasn't mentioned elsewhere in my interview materials. I thought it was funny that the VIPKid experience was so strict on rules, but that they presented them in such an inefficient, scattered fashion. Then I decided to watch the training video that was linked and was pretty surprised at how detailed it was-- again, I feel like the online application is made to seem oh-so-casual and leads you to believe that you'll be trained along the way so not to stress too much. But then, the opposite is true-- they want you showing up with HOURS of prep, all for free. I started looking at other YouTube videos from current teachers and was told all sorts of things-- have LOTS of stuffed animals, decorate your apartment background, wear orange...Okay. Red flag #2: it's skeezy to trick people into thinking their interview is no biggie and then make it into a "GOTCHA" situation. I should have just stopped then but, I loved the idea of a part-time remote gig with those hours...so I persevered and kept my interview appointment. To test out the online module and calibrate my computer for video/headphone chat, I logged in a full 20 minutes early. To my great surprise-- the person who turned out to be my evaluator was online. It was awkward and odd. I explained that I was setting up prior to our evaluation, and she didn't seem to understand that. She then spent 5 minutes reading me a script explaining to me how to turn on my headphones? She didn't understand English well enough to grasp that I needed her to just leave me alone until our appointment started. And there was no courteous way to get rid of her lol! I had set aside plenty of time to rehearse and she cut into it and then, told me we would start early?! Wow. The lesson itself was fine, although she seemed to be rushing me through. She didn't challenge me and figured every answer out immediately. There was also some distraction with someone in her apartment. The whole thing was just...not good. I was unimpressed that this person was supervising me. I had made up my mind that this was not the place for me around the time that the person in charge of me didn't process what I was saying or seem capable of common courtesy; I'm a firm believer in company culture fitting in with my needs for things to work. But I could tell that for whatever reason, my eval was not loving me, either. So it was a mutual nuh-uh. I got an email roughly 24 hours later passing and was like, "Yep. Same tbh". I think this company would be great for people who don't mind spending lots and lots of time prepping on their own dime. That is NOT me. I also don't like being told one thing is expected of me and finding out that there's a lot more that's asked and made to feel as if I'm somehow responsible. Not the right place for me.

Applicants referred by our current contracted teachers are very special to us, and as we grow, the numbers of these applicants is also rising. We now have a dedicated department exclusively referrals and we hope you will take the time to reapply in the future. While we hope that when applying that our applicants are able to prepare as well as they feel they have, VIPKID does not require the purchase of classroom items or equipment during the application process. You are welcome to email us to get more feedback about your interview and demo lesson performance. Our email is teachvip@vipkid.com.cn.

just a quick demo lesson following the course materials, then a few logistical questions and talk about the program. Was quite quick and easy overall if you have teaching experience..

Pretty simple! There was a live and recorded portion where you "teach" a sample class. My interviewer was nice and helpful. Make sure your internet is good and use a wired connection

Easy and straight forward interview process. There is a demo teaching section. This was a while ago so it may have changed. The onboarding process was also easy. Again, this was a while ago, so it may have changed.
