As others have stated, just go on to the site and answer the essay along with the multiple choice. After you finish that they have you review, what I can only think to call it, orientation materials on how to properly caption. You then have to caption a short 1-2min video, sync the captions to the audio, edit, review, download your captions into a SRT and upload to their site then submit. Took me about 3-4 hours to get through the appropriate caption materials and about 30min on the sample because I wanted to ensure it was done to the T. Apparently though I, like many others, didn't meet up to their "rigorous minimum standards". Now I'm wondering if they just have folks apply and change out the "sample" every time just to get free labor.

It was all online. You read their instructions, watched a video and then proceeded to do a test captioning assignment.
I had never done captioning before, but they didn't list this as an obstacle. Yet, even though I had no experience, they turned me down without giving specific reasons. "We are only able to approve freelancers who demonstrate the highest captioning standards." But I had never done it before!
In any case, I feel like I dodged a bullet, since most reviews here say the pay is awful. I was only looking for some extra income. The work is tedious, so if you don't get paid well, it doesn't really seem worth it. NEXT!

Nothing. They asked nothing about my experience, who I am, etc.

This is/was an independent contractor position. The selection process consisted of a short grammar and language test, plus captioning a 90 sec. video. They provided a style guide for convenience. The company's "Dash" software is integrated into web browsers. Once initial application is reveiewed, an invitation was sent to complete a second and third test video. Communication and review of application occurred quickly (4-6 hours). Jobs were sent to me soon after I passed the second test. The test was not tricky, but required adherence to their style guide, strong language and some technical skills (typing/media).

Watch a video that details how to caption videos, then you caption one yourself. If you do a good job, you're moved on to the next round and asked to complete the captions for two different videos. You do have a deadline to complete these videos.
I emailed Rev four times about my Dash editor (the captioning software they use) not working for the final video and continued to receive an automated response from them. Thus, I was unable to complete my final video and be considered as a viable applicant.
Overall, I think I would've enjoyed doing this part-time. Unfortunate they can't get their tool working correctly; they're missing out on great talent.
