Rapid7 reached out via LinkedIn in what appeared to be a blasted note to former strategy consultants in the Boston area, and I accepted an interview despite a few warning signs, including:
- No apparent history of attracting former strategy consultants
- Position description that sounded like corporate jargon salad
- No apparent employees currently in the group recruiting
- Key selling point of role being that it's "HIGH PROFILE"
Based on the profile details provided, the salary was far below market, and they had neither considered what a promotion path might look like nor matched the responsibilities for this role to the level of former consultant they wanted. (It looks like an engagement manager role, but they wanted someone "a few jobs out" from consulting with 7-10 years of post-MBA experience.) These are important, as few strategy consultants want to make a career in an internal strategy group for a publicly-traded company. Lastly, I would be asked to be leveled at the Sr. Director level despite having more experience than all other Sr. Directors in the company.
Altogether, I felt this ended up being market research more than an interview. I suggested they wouldn't easily fill the role with the current requirements, and many months out, it's not apparent they made a hire.
