Had 3 interviews, 2 being a phone interview with the HR recruiter and then a manager, the third was with 3 separate individuals in varies level of the team. During the last interview, consisting of algorithm questions, only one individual actually took their time to come up with their own coding exercise. The other two simply pulled a question off of one of those coding websites, even hinting at a solution that matched exactly what was provided on the web. A question taken directly off of a website should justify a similar answer, one taken directly from a google search. During no part of the interview process was a single question asked directly related to the position or to judge a candidate's ability to handle the responsibility as stated in the role, mainly front-end task. Algorithm is certainly relevant for any programming job but at the very least, put some effort and tailor your questions to match the role at hand. If you studied all the questions off of those coding site, you will certain pass and get hire but it does not mean a candidate knows how the web works and all the variables that influence the performance of a website outside of the code alone, from optimized sql queries to dom selection.

Talked to a recruiter who was nice and helpful. I received a request for 30 minute interview after a couple of weeks, and wasn’t provided any details on what specifically the interview would entail. Since it was just 30 minutes, I assumed it would be a behavioral interview however when I entered the interview I was told it was technical and was for a specific library/framework that I don’t work with on a day to day basis. Had I been informed or briefed on what the interview was for beforehand, I would have been prepared, but as I wasn’t told, it only increased my anxiety and so the interview didn’t go as great as it would have. Technical interviews are generally 1 hour, so a heads up on at least saying my 30 minute inter would be a react coding challenge would’ve been appreciated so I could’ve refreshed my knowledge.
