I was contacted by the account manager for a particular fragrance brand. She enjoyed the interview so I spoke with the department manager and HR Manager the same day. All seemed well until I heard nothing back for 2 weeks. I was then told I'd have to speak with the assistant department manager. After speaking with him, I was told I'd hear something back the next week. By the time I'd received the rejection email (2 months later), I'd already accepted a position elsewhere. Despite my background, experience, flexibility and capabilities, they were worried I may be unable to "connect with the brand clientele." Ironically, the account manager felt I would be a great fit and was willing to hire me as a brand rep for a different account.
While I did not agree, I certainly hope my dark skin and dreadlocks had nothing to do with this "tough" decision.
