I got called in for an interview approximately one week after applying. During the interview we were introduced to all of the managers, and the store manager, his assistant, and one of the other managers conducted the interview. The store manager basically asked questions regarding customer service, handling unpleasant situations with associates, and previous job performance. He would ask the question, people would raise their hands, and he would call on them to answer. He would generally allow as many people as he could permit to answer the question and then move on.
There were about thirty people at the interview and I was the only one who had no previous retail experience. Everyone was very actively engaged in answering the questions, but only 7 of us got hired-- I was included. It seems to me that they definitely want you actively engaged, answering the questions. They also are looking for personality-- when I entered the room the manager was standing at the front and I smiled at him. At the beginning of the interview he said he was testing us and that only two people said hello, which was what he'd been looking for. He definitely wanted to see outgoing personalities. I made up for it by giving sincere answers and answering all the questions. Also, he seemed to be looking for people who showed dedication and loyalty, and not just that they wanted to get a paying job. If you have the experience in retail he also wanted to hear about that because experience is obviously a plus, but in my case where I did not my forthrightness and openness in the interview seemed to be what got it for me.
Expect to be there for 2-3 hours-- they take big groups generally. They will call for a break and go over the different people and call you back. If you got the job they will ask you to stay for a second, brief interview. If not you will simply be told you can leave. During the second interview they simply ask you a few questions regarding availability, ability to perform the job, etc, and then ask if you would be willing to take the job. During my group interview they interviewed for several positions-- the position I was offered (Ad Set Associate) was not the one that I wanted (POS) but they decided I would best fit there so I took it.
That's pretty much it-- if you are interviewing for POS and have previous experience you will probably get it. I'm pretty sure that they put me in Ad Set because of my lack of experience. But I know quite a few associates working POS and Sales floor at Kohl's who started out at Ad Set. So if you get offered that position instead don't think it's the end of the world just because it's late shifts and few hours. If you do well they will put you in a better position! Good luck!
