I was approached on LinkedIn by someone on behalf of the design team at Johnson Controls. I was asked if I would have availability to do freelance work to which I said yes. They then asked me to complete a test. I thought this was a bit much considering I would only get the opportunity to work on a freelance basis after successful completion of the task. I asked if I would be paid for my time spent on the task to which they declined and I communicated my reluctance to work for free. However, i eventually relented as I thought the opportunity to have them as a client would be too good to pass up. They sent out a test and I worked on it for an entire day ensuring the document was of a high standard. Not only did they not offer me any work, after multiple requests for a response they wouldn’t even give me feedback. They have since started hiring for similar roles while I never even received a response from the design team. Horrific treatment of freelance creatives by a multi million dollar company.
