I've had two interviews with JCP. I originally applied to be in Sephora but they consider that a "promotion" within the store. My first interview was one on one and they asked questions about me and my work history. They also asked questions relating to sales and customer service (which they are huge on). Overall it was a pretty typical interview and I was offered the job in commission sales in the Window department. I declined because I knew I wouldn't show my best self in that department and I already had a sales job, so if I was going to leave that job it would have to be something worth leaving for. Fast forward to my next interview, they were hiring seasonal for Sephora and it was a group interview. This is JCP's typical interview process and it is HORRIBLE. First off, they don't ask you much if anything about your credentials or about yourself. You have to get into your group and pick between two scenarios that you think will drive business to the store and present it to the leadership. After that they bring you out onto the floor and have you pick something inside Sephora to sell. It's awkward and uncomfortable, not something everyone will be good at. They want to see you work in a team I guess, but role playing and brainstorming in an interview with people you don't know and being put on the spot when you're already nervous to make a good impression is a recipe for disaster.

Pick between two scenarios with your group and choose which one will help bring business to the store.
Group interview. Interviewer asked questions and whoever wanted to answer first would answer and so on. Standard retail questions were asked like what to do in certain situations so they can see how prepared you’ve are.

I went through numerous interviews. The manager made me feel very calm and chill. I was offered a position pending a background check. I have no record so this should be a piece of cake right? Nope, my background check was taking seemingly longer than normal and every time I called to check in I was told it hadn’t come back yet/“probably backed up in the system”. Turns out that JCPenny has a 2 week policy where if the check doesn’t come back within that time they move on with another candidate. They never informed me of this and it went on for over a month before they did. Not only that, but turns out my background check did come back in time, they just “weren’t aware of it”. My advice would be to not be afraid to check in and keep the lines of communication open during the hiring process.

It was about 15 minutes long and they kept asking me to work the dock (stock) even though I had applied for sales. My background was and has been in sales so I was confused as to why she wanted me there. When I said no she then proceeded to ask me if I would be interested in a home decor position instead. Not the position I applied for.
