Apply online at jcp.com or other sites like snagajob.com. You will be called in for an interview with the store manager. Dress business casual is best. Management is pretty laid back so just be yourself. Call backs are quick. Training will begin within a week or two after hiring depending on the current schedule already out.

I was shocked to hear that a credit check would be ran on me.
Got call to come in for interview. Pretty basic behavioral questions. Starting salary was 8.75. Was given a tour of the store, and all the departments. Overall was a good experience and not too difficult

I applied for the back room, but instead they offered me a different job on the sales floor. I walked in and sat down for at least 5 minutes before being told I got the job.
Put in an application in 2012 and was called about 5 days letter for an interview. Met with one of the HR reps and he was cool, he liked me and we scheduled a second interview with the store manager and it went well. Ended up getting the job in a week, but the background check
