Had an initial call with a hiring manager who asked some basic behavioral questions and talked about my background. Salary was brought up and I gave them my range (which was under the median for an Engineering Manager nationally) and the manager said it was a bit high, but they might be able to work something out.
Had a second interview and it seems they wanted both a technical individual contributor role and a managerial role for this position. Basically they wanted the Engineering Manager to build out all sorts of frameworks from scratch, then recruit, hire, onboard, and manage while still doing technical contributions. So basically two jobs for the price of less than the national median of one. After this they decided to move on to other candidates, which I was totally OK with.
Pretty obvious that this company wanted FAANG level talent pulling double duty, but on Southern US wages. No thanks.
