      Entrevista para Engineering Manager

      5 de oct de 2022
      Candidato de entrevista anónimo
      New York, NY
      Sin ofertas
      Experiencia negativa

Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Glassdoor (New York, NY) en sept 2022

      Entrevista

First, there were some good things about the people I spoke with. There was a technical assessment geared toward frontend development (my IC background) that I thought was a practical, yet still tricky in a few ways; that was fantastic. I'm stealing it for my own hiring! Additionally, this manager was extremely helpful and asked me great questions. They were excited enough about my candidacy to tell me immediately that they would recommend me to proceed. Then a hiring manager screen, where I met with someone maybe a little unengaged (one-word responses to anything I said), until they found something to latch onto and kind of argue with me about. I said I'm looking to learn from the team and was open to new ideas, but things didn't quite jive personality-wise. If nothing else, this was good for me to know about the culture of disagreement at Glassdoor at the leadership level. Maybe we didn't agree, but it was helpful for both of us to at least know where we stand on our respective approaches to technical leadership and people management. Probably not the right fit, but fair enough. Anyway, that's all pretty normal stuff. What was frankly quite shocking to me however, was the interview process itself. At every point in the process, I had to follow up more than once. One time, I didn't hear back for over a week after submitting interview availability, making my own search across multiple other roles that much harder. Perhaps most surprising still was the "you didn't get the email? check your junk folder" suggestion—I can't even remember the last time I've heard that one. High school? My teachers never fell for it, and neither did I this time. As I'm sure the reader is also doing, we're all interviewing with multiple companies on a job search. We speak with high-quality recruiters that set us up for success, maybe even contact us *too much* with updates—and then you have teams like the one at Glassdoor, where even the most basic metrics of professionalism seem like a real struggle. I don't know about you, but I'd really hate to be on a team with expectations were low enough to the point where people were expecting me to ghost them. Which was, of course, exactly what happened. As others have pointed out, you expect a little more out of a place like Glassdoor, where transparency appears to be a value of the company. It was very disappointing to realize that they are in fact at the very bottom among others I've spoken with in the past month and change.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. The feedback that you've provided indicates that we are doing some things well and still have areas for improvement. Regarding the missed email situation you noted, our team does use an automated scheduling service and there may have been a technical error, thus the confusion with emails. With that being said, your experience is not the standard that we hold ourselves to and we will be using this to improve our processes further. - Jake Dorochenko, TA Manager

      Entrevista

The overall interview process was fairly standard – initial recruiter screening, interview with hiring manager, technical interview, followed by the "virtual on-site" interviews (which touched on areas like leadership, systems design, and product). The entire process was carried out over the course of a month on account of my existing work/interview schedule. They were also flexible with my start date, which was very much appreciated! Everybody that I interviewed with was very friendly and welcoming, which left me with a good impression of the company.
