Considering its far-flung operations, NATO has come a long way from its roots in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed following the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949. The aim of the organization is to ensure the safety and freedom of its 26 European and North American member nations through peaceful resolution of disputes and protection against aggression. With the end of the Cold War (and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact), NATO has increased its role in crisis management and peacekeeping missions, both within and beyond Europe.
