2025 was a big year for customer investment on BNSF's rail network! Our customers invested more than $5.3 billion, completing 117 rail-served facility projects on our network. This was the biggest number in the past six years. These projects created more than 1,200 jobs, expanded production capacity, strengthened supply chains and supported long-term economic growth. We also recently welcomed a new Certified Site near Mobile, Alabama, the first BNSF Certified Site to be served by a BNSF Shortline Select™ Partner, Genesee & Wyoming’s (G&W) Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway (AGR). The announcements further magnify BNSF’s commitment to growth through strategic partnerships.
Safety goes into everything we do at BNSF, including something tucked in the undersides of a locomotive. It’s called ODIN, short for Onboard Defect Identification & Notification, a system housed in an aluminum box that analyzes track conditions as the locomotive is used to pull freight. The ultimate goal of ODIN is to reduce derailments originating from track geometry defects through increased inspections.
This year, Black History Month celebrates 100 years of work to preserve and share the stories of Black Americans. We at BNSF celebrate the achievements of Black Americans who have helped to build our company, the railroad industry and the American way of life.
This Native American Heritage Month, we honor the histories and cultures of Indigenous nations and celebrate the traditions that continue to shape the communities we serve. We are grateful for the lasting contributions Native peoples have made to BNSF and the rail industry.
Positive Train Control (PTC) is a technology that helps prevent train-to-train collisions and derailments. As of 2023, we had installed PTC on 100% of mandated territory by the federal government. Then, when we resumed operations on the Montana Rail Link (MRL) in 2024, we expanded our PTC footprint. This June, the technology was implemented on 36 miles of what is now our MRL Subdivision, with another 570 miles currently under way. Completion is expected in December.

It’s Rail Innovation Week! Starting today through the 18th, we’re shining a light on the technologies, ideas and people that are shaping the future of rail. Today’s spotlight focuses on safety, and our deep focus here at BNSF to always keep safety top of mind in everything we do. One piece of important technology we utilize is our wheel tread inspection detectors, or WTIDs. WTIDs are a machine vision system that finds defects in wheel tread. After the WTID takes images of the wheel, images are processed with machine vision models to analyze wheel surface conditions. If an issue is detected, wheels can be quickly and efficiently repaired or replaced. Read more about WTID and other safety technologies here: http://bit.ly/4lpbo6f
BNSF is excited to announce the addition of Watco’s Timber Rock Railroad (TIBR) to its Shortline Select program. TIBR operates more than 50 miles of track between Kirbyville, TX and DeRidder, LA providing access to important markets in East Texas and Southwestern Louisiana. TIBR will soon begin a $50 million capital project to improve the capacity of the railroad and the reliability of service. The Shortline Select program, which launched last fall, allows shortline railroads to share our enduring commitment to growth and service by providing expanded opportunities for customers to reach an even broader consumer base. The program also combines the benefit of shortline customized service with our vast network reach. Existing Shortline Select service partners include Genesee & Wyoming’s Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway (AGR), Burlington Junction Railway (BJRY), Genesee & Wyoming’s Portland & Western Railway (PNWR), TNW Corporation’s Texas Northwestern Railroad (TXNW) and Red River Valley & Western (RRVW). We look forward to working with Watco’s TIBR to enhance our service performance together.
