Me postulé a través de una agencia de empleos. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Skyscanner (Edimburgo, Escocia) en mar 2022
Entrevista
I interviewed for a Distributed Systems Software Engineer II role in March/April 2022. The process took 1 month from start to finish, but Skyscanner were very flexible with timings.
The interview process consisted of
- initial 1 hour coding pairing challenge
- first stage interviews: depth of technical experience, and culture (2 x 1 hour)
- final stage interviews: 2 system design and one culture (3 x 1 hour)
Both the coding challenge and the 2 system design challenges were specific to Skyscanner usecases, not generic technical questions. The culture interviews were very thorough in covering every one of the company's values.
As someone who is relatively junior in their engineering career, I found the process quite challenging, and ultimately my lack of experience meant that I did not pass the system design interviews. However, the experience was overall a positive one, with receptive interviewers, and good tips and feedback from the Skyscanner recruiter at every stage. I definitely wouldn't be put off applying for a similar role in future when I have more experience.
There were five stages in the process: Recruiter Call, Coding Pair, Technical Deep Dive, System Design, and Cultural Interview.
I was genuinely excited about the opportunity and progressed to the Technical Deep Dive stage, but then received a rejection from a no-reply email address without any feedback.
What made this especially frustrating is that the interview itself did not feel as though it had gone badly. During the conversation, I got responses such as “that makes sense” throughout. If there were gaps in my answers, I would have expected the interviewer to probe further or challenge certain points, but that did not happen. It left me feeling that the outcome did not align with how the interview came across at the time.
I may be mistaken, but one possible explanation is that they felt I was overclaiming. If so, that could easily have been clarified by asking for more concrete evidence or examples during the interview.
Overall, the most disappointing part has been the complete lack of feedback despite the significant time and effort required to prepare for and complete multiple interview stages. I also made attempts to reach out to the team for feedback, but those efforts were unsuccessful. For a process of this length, not providing any feedback reflects poorly on the candidate experience.

You can expect a Graph type of question for the coding pair, but the good thing about this is that they are genuinely just assessing how you approach problems, etc.

The interview process mainly had these for stages -
1. Recruiter Screening
2. Depth of Expertise - screening
3. System Design
4. Behavioural round
The recruiter reached out after every round, and also provided feedback in the end.

For the depth of expertise round, I was asked to describe a project I did in the past, sort of a system design round but for a choice of my own project.

It had 5 rounds, initial screening, coding challenge, describe a project you have participated in, cultural fit and system design.
The process was in total about 1.5-2 months, with constant feedback from the company and full transparency throughout the process, they value more your attitude than your results, and the interviewers were extremely nice.
The recruiter was really helpful and did as much as they could to accommodate me for my needs, great experience.

For the second round of the interview, prepare some diagrams and schematics in order to explain your personal project!
