First call with the product design manager. This interview was so common: presentation of the team, then the candidate presented itself and all the same blabla. Nothing exciting, the tone of the manager was not really stimulating and the plans about this role seemed to me not mature enough in order to let me project myself into a team dimension with Shopify. Actually the french team is just starting to settle since Shopify is opening to a new market. Few weeks after the first meeting I had no answer and no feedback about my application. This practice is unprofessional and it makes me believe that they dont care enough about this new french role.

I thought they did a great job of guiding you through the process and focusing on different skill sets for each 1x1 interview. I do admit that I should have put more effort into preparing myself before hand. The screening interview with the hiring manager was straightforward, I’d say this was easiest for me given that I can share some cool experiences I have dating back to a decade of design with tech teams. The second interview, a duet, was a good exercise and concept, I just focused too much on the problem and user story vs the interface and components of the product. The third interview was an open conversation, again.. come prepared and don’t try to do everything on the fly like I did (unless that’s your thing). Think of a format that hits all the key details of past experiences or situations. Also ask a tons of questions based on the role and the team, they have processes and formulas that work, super interesting stuff. And for the port review, I’d say I blew it. I picked something complex to share and it didn’t quite land, my story telling could have been dialed in a little more, and I didn’t have time to create a proper deck for it. Lesson learned.
