I applied online and was called for an in-person interview with the hiring team after a couple of days. What surprised me was for a mid-senior level position there was no phone screening. The interviewing team was very cordial and friendly. There was nothing formal, however, it was insightful, and conversational more in lines with what I was doing and what I did in the past. I could clearly see that the hiring manager was trying to give me the time out of courtesy and respect whereas I knew that they made a mistake by not having a phone screening before.. reason being - though I had 'stellar' track record I was new to the industry. After the interview, the HR person confirmed that they will call me back again to meet the hiring team (again) and in the meantime, I was scheduled to speak to another senior member of the team. The call with the senior member was again out of courtesy, as it was supposed to be to understand her role and what will be expected of the one I was interviewing for. However, I found her rather curt and not all welcoming.
What appalled me the most was despite mentioning a few times that I will be called back again, I followed up a few times on email, and finally when I called the HR on phone she sounded as if she had 'forgotten' about me (I could be wrong, but I felt it). The same day I received an email from them saying they are going ahead with another candidate.
I was not upset with not being selected, but more with the interview process broadly - no phone screening to understand prelim fit, bad follow up, and again equally bad feedback process.
