The interviewing process might have been a bit harsher, but I knew the professor in question. Not much of an interview was needed considering he was familiar with my work. The Math Department then had to just confirm and stamp everything and I was able to begin working. I would say attention to detail and the ability to provide feedback would be the necessary traits which the interviewer would be looking.
