They are very much a values and culture driven company - so naturally their hiring process reflects this. A lot of the interview is personality related, not skills. However, they will ask about your experience too.

Online application followed by a phone interview and interview with leadership. Block is a successful mid-size business with a lot of potential for growth. Easy phone interview that was a quick response to an online application. It was much appreciated as some places take their own time in even responding. The in-person interview process was key to understanding the organization. I had studied up on the website and knew that there were a lot of employees who extoll their religious beliefs. I was a little surprised at how much that played into an interview. The leaders I met with enjoyed using a lot of yoga babble (I use this term lovingly). Honestly, I know what color my parachute is, where I fall in the Myers Briggs...hell, I even know which Friends character I am. I realized throughout the process that a new candidate would be smart to follow the Block Imaging president's blog. Yes, there will be questions that are on the test. I understand that the company puts a premium on culture but I think it puts a discount on experience and potential for fresh ideas. I don't remember anyone asking about past projects or reviewing any of the successes I'd had that made me confident and qualified for the position. I will say that I was also thrown off by some of the questions that are just not appropriate to ask during an interview like 'do you have any kids' or 'who will you hang out with this weekend/in your spare time and what do you do"? I feel that the best candidates for this company surely will be those who are directly referred for positions.

Thank you! The artful critique of not just the interview process but also culture and leaders certainly is reflective of a great deal of creativity. As this site is intended to help future candidates select an organization, it’s important to bring added clarity: While competency is certainly a baseline expectation in any role, our team is looking well beyond projects and into an individual’s ability to function well within a team environment. The scope of the candidacy process is even further expanded in situations where we’re looking to select directors and managers. In adding these members to our team, we’re looking to assess one’s ability to operate within a management team, lead people, craft a vision and create a pathway toward execution across the entire company. Regarding the mention of “answers to the test,” while the People Matter at Work blog certainly gives a window into the culture we’re looking to foster, a candidate’s familiarity with the content is utterly irrelevant to the candidacy process. Lastly, while we do provide a page for our team members to share about themselves and their families, I can speak with certainty that religious beliefs were not probed and are deeply protected in this organization. Thank you again for your interest in joining the Block Imaging team and we wish you the very best in the next chapter of your career. Most respectfully, Josh Block President
