      Although I am quite aware that age is still an issue in this day and age, I felt it had nothing to do with my ability to to the work required.

      That is an illegal questions. Apparently the interviewer is not well-versed in HR practices.

      I'm pretty sure that there are laws that allow you to refuse to answer this question. Something to do with the whole age discrimination act and such...
