As a engineer with 10 YoE I was drawn to Square because they boast about their interview process being less algo/DS/LeetCode centric and more relevant to day-to-day. With a decade on my CV, thought I'd have a good venue to dive deep into my expertise and value I've provided elsewhere while demonstrating ability to get real work done. Applied online. Got automated response that I was in the system. Confirmation email again boasted about their interview style focusing on real-world scenarios. Contacted by a "recruiter" a day later to respond with availability for phone screen. Provided availability, got a google invite with hangouts link and coderpad link. Never got any non-templated/generated email from a recruiter, never had a chance to speak with Hiring Manager prior to screen to see if the role is even possibly a good fit. Tech Screen with 2 engineers. Both nice but got right to business as soon as they joined with a LeetCode-style medium difficulty problem. Solved it with 20 minutes to spare with a few hints from interview. He layered on a second, more difficult problem on top. With no time to implement, we discussed a possible approach. Obligatory 5 minutes at the end for questions. Generic rejection email the next day. Not convinced the recruiter was actually a human, likely a recruiter bot. Would have saved 3 engineers across both companies an hour of their time if fit was confirmed ahead of time and/or Square was actually honest up-front about what to expect. I understand this is standard process for big tech in the Bay Area who need to weed through hundreds of inexperienced applicants for every req, but Square should cut the BS and be honest that they are part of the LeetCode grinder.

Hiring manager implored me to apply, stating that Square has moved away from algorithmic interviews. The recruiter also mentioned that interviews are based on "real-world problems". Instead, I was asked to traverse a nested array (a binary search algorithm, essentially). I probably would have completed the solution except the interviewer wasted half our allotted time on a "warm up" then only introduced the actual problem halfway through our session. This kind of interview does not measure real-world engineering skills at all and is biased towards people who have time to study (e.g. no responsibilities outside of work). Square claims to value inclusion and non-traditional backgrounds but their interview process clearly indicates otherwise. The cherry on top is that they will ghost you if they don't wish to move forward.

Pretty standard interview process: 1. talk with hr 2. 1h technical interview or for mobile positions there is an option to choose a take home project. 3. Then 6 interviews (virtual on site). 2 coding sessions (continue on the project for mobile), 3 Q&A behavior sessions and 1 session with hiring manager. Read many negative reviews here about coding sessions so chose the take home project which was not difficult or tricky. Everything is straightforward and gives you a chance to be your best self. On the other hand, Q&A sessions were weird. They all have different theme but many questions were asked multiple times. Felt like interviews didn’t sync up who asks what and they just googled behavioral questions and chose questions from the first page. Moreover, everyone asked to introduce myself (6 times I repeated my intro) even though next questions were not related to my experience for most sessions. Recruiters didn’t respond when they promised. Also, one recruiter sent an email to schedule a call to give a feedback after the virtual on-site, scheduled for the next day and the call was just 3 minutes (said I didn’t perform well on one of the sessions) and that was it. Well, it could have been an email or a call same day. No need to schedule a whole meeting if you don’t know how to give a meaningful feedback. Overall, on site interviews left negative impression. Everyone in the industry conducts interviews for the whole day, seemed like Square just copied it without training their employees or preparing questions and dividing areas. It’s hard to make an unbiased decision if you don’t have a structure and clear expectations. Not to mention, all interviewer (8 people) were male that makes me question how diverse and inclusive this workspace is.

Started with a quick chat with the recruiter on my background and what I’m looking for. She used this info to determine if the spot I applied for would be a good fit (it was). I went thru the tech phone screen which was a question asked in stages. I managed to get thru 4 stages here with a test-driven approach without too many issues. I was then invited to the onsite. They did a good job accelerating scheduling since I had a few offers extended to me already. The paired programming rounds were all asked in stages, similar to the tech screen. I did well on all the paired programming interviews (making it past the 3rd or 4th stage each round) and okay on the system design and past experience QA rounds. The latter two rounds are more open-ended so it’s sometimes difficult to gauge what the interviewers are looking for. From talking with the hiring manager, they seemed to want more frontend skills on the team. I happened to do extremely well on the frontend round(finished early and even noticed a mistake in the prompt on the last task). It seemed to be a good fit so they offered me at the level I was looking for. Overall, it was my favorite interview process compared to all the other more Leetcode-style interviews I did.

This was one of the worst interview processes I had ever experienced. The interviewer was a junior developer and had literally no interview experience. I helped him to facilitate the interview. The question was quite simple and we had about 10 minutes by end of the interview. I asked him if he wants me to improve the solution by pointing out possible improvement points. However, he said that he was happy with the outcome. After a few days, I got feedback saying the interviewer could not collect enough data points and had some concerns because I was not 100% familiar with the online interview tool they used. This was the most interesting criteria I have ever heard of for an interview. Eventually, we did not continue the process. But the process was very unprofessionally from beginning to end.

Recruiter reached out to me on linkedin and did a 30min phone screening. A few days later, scheduled a technical interview. The technical was a 1 hr paired coding challenge. The technical interview was awful! The interviewer was a junior and led me down the wrong path during the code challenge! During the interview, I felt strongly that the company is ageist -- do not apply here unless you are a young and cool developer. The interviewer kept "guiding" me to solve the problem in the 1 way he thought was correct, that is not good teamwork, that is hubris.

Preguntas de entrevistas
  • Rank teams by votes: In a special ranking system, each voter gives a rank from highest to lowest to all teams participated in the competition. The ordering of teams is decided by who received the most position-one votes. If two or more teams tie in the first position, we consider the second position to resolve the conflict, if they tie again, we continue this process until the ties are resolved. If two or more teams are still tied after considering all positions, we rank them alphabetically based on their team letter. Given an array of strings votes which is the votes of all voters in the ranking systems. Sort all teams according to the ranking system described above. Return a string of all teams sorted by the ranking system.

Initial phone screen with recruiter. Then set up for a pair programming session. The initial process with the recruiter provided lots of helpful information. They even provided a few resources on how to prepare for a technical interview. The pair programming interviewer was not helpful at all. When we got to the coderpad the interviewer just copy pasted a bunch of text with little overview. He did a poor job explaining the problem. A lot of time was spent just trying to understand what I'm being asked to do. The interviewer would type fast, copy paste fast, move text around fast trying to explain the problem. It was a mess. Finally when I understood the basic question, I was able to approach a solution. I came up with a solution and the interviewer admitted I had solved the problem. The interview was scheduled for a full hour. A lot of time was left but the interviewer said he had no more questions and that was it. The recruiter went into all this stuff about their friendly process with lots of different steps. The recruiter said everything goes to a committee for a final decision. None of that happened. They just scheduled some engineer to do the interview, he did a poor job of it, and I guess he sent a thumbs down to the recruiter even though I did answer the one question correctly with time left. After that it was over.

Initial contact was with a recruiter. Subsequent technical interview was awful. The interviewer was completely junior who knew absolutely nothing about the job position. The interviewer asked questions about designing a game with probabilities which had nothing to do with the job and something you would only see in school if not in the gaming industry. When I brought up asking if the probabilities question was work-related, the interviewer's responses were blatantly ageist and inappropriate. Other interview reviews have also mentioned the blatant ageist bias.

Entrevista

Interviews after initial phone screen with recruiter involved two technical coderpad phone screens. The recruiter was very very helpful and gave a thorough outline of the entire interview process as well as details on how the company works internally in regard to open positions. First was an hour long algorithmic pair programming session that involved writing code of my choice. The interviewer was helpful but rather blunt and not very warm to hearing my thought process. I admittedly wasn't well prepared for the question since it was outside my area of expertise and it was rather vague to me. The interviewer was helpful but obviously was set on a particular answer and steered toward that solution. Overall was an okay experience but I think the interviewer could have had some preparation on the communication and experience side of the conversation. Second interview was an hour long session building a simple program in code of my choice for managing an events calendar. The project gained complexity as it was further refined with business logic. The interviewer was very nice and overall was a good communicator and helpful with giving direction and hearing out my thought process.
