A recruiter reached out to me a week after I submitted my application with an assignment that needed to be completed within 48 hours. I submitted it within that time frame and there was no response. I can see the patterns of ghosting that other candidates mention- run! Two weeks later, I receive a generic email saying they've moved forward with someone else. But wait, there's more. Two more weeks go by and the recruiter reaches out saying they added additional headcount and wanted to see if I'm still interested. I responded and followed up and surprise surprise, no response. If you are going to have a time limit where candidates have to complete an assignment, the least you can do is keep them in the know. What is going on with their team?

Met with recruiter, then HM, then did 3 hour case study building a model, then did full round of interviews. After all that the recruiter never got back to me on the outcome. I emailed him three times but no response.

The interview process made me very hesitant about joining the company because it was so strange and not well thought out. I had 7 rounds of interviews total for a mid-lvl engineer. 1st technical screen was a 1hr coding interview. I was 90% done with the last problem when then the interviewer stopped me due to 5 mins being left. They then erased my work to fill in the answer themselves. Despite the interviewer having 10 YoE in SW and knowing the answer, they struggled and took 20 mins to get a working program. I then got feedback after the first round saying I passed, but the interviewer ironically said that I struggled on the final question. Clearly they had a hurt ego, but I got past the round so no harm, no fowl. Next was the actual core interviews. At this point they make you sign an NDA and let me know I had 6 more rounds. During these interviews, I was really confused as to what Square was trying to achieve or learn about candidates. No one asked me a single behavioral question, qualifications, or even basic programming theory. Instead, it was hours of theory questions, a couple more coding questions (which was basically a repeat of the tech screen), and maybe 2 questions about my resume. Some of the theory questions were really dated too. Interviewers did seem a bit inexperienced since they didn't know much about other facets of the topics they were interviewing about. It seems like the only reason they make you sign the NDA is so other people don't find out how much of a mess the interview process is. It's true Square is taking in surveys to improve the interview process and Everyone talks about Square having "growing pains", but you have to remember that they've been around and interviewing for over 10 years. It really doesn't get much better than this.

Hiring manager implored me to apply, stating that Square has moved away from algorithmic interviews. The recruiter also mentioned that interviews are based on "real-world problems". Instead, I was asked to traverse a nested array (a binary search algorithm, essentially). I probably would have completed the solution except the interviewer wasted half our allotted time on a "warm up" then only introduced the actual problem halfway through our session. This kind of interview does not measure real-world engineering skills at all and is biased towards people who have time to study (e.g. no responsibilities outside of work). Square claims to value inclusion and non-traditional backgrounds but their interview process clearly indicates otherwise. The cherry on top is that they will ghost you if they don't wish to move forward.

Technical phone screen with an engineer was as far as I got. It's intended to be a "pair programming" session, but I'll just say it didn't feel very collaborative. The first layer of it was an LC easy/medium style problem. Once I got a working solution for that, he added a 2nd layer of complexity. I described my approach, but he seemed resistant to it, but did not clearly articulate what the problem was. I couldn't tell if he actually saw a flaw or was testing my ability to defend my decisions. Either way, his pushback threw me off, and maybe that was enough for a rejection. I tried to explore his reasons more to see if I should consider a different approach (trying to be collaborative) but maybe this came off as indecisive. I did not get any feedback on what I should do differently, and I couldn't think of anything on my own, so decided to go with my idea. Ran out of time implementing it.

I submitted my application via their careers page and was contacted a few weeks later regarding a 15-minute intro phone call with a screener. I spoke with him and it was fairly simple - he asked me about my work history and gave me a description of the role. He passed me on to the next round which involved speaking with a hiring manager for 30 minutes. The hiring manager asked me about my work history the majority of the call and then asked me to define what an API is and although the definition was provided, she continued to ask the question over again expecting a specific answer. It was weird. Once we got that part out of the way she let me know they would reach back out within the next few days. Few days turned into three weeks with an automated email stating that they moved on to other candidates. The experience was odd and not transparent at all. I'm unsure how they can grasp at what a good candidate is by asking what an API is but here we are.

I had 3 back to back interviews with two managers and tentative co-worker. The managers seemed to be more upbeat, but the AE co-worker was notably tired and unamused. The culture is mainly seen to be based on high levels of commitment to work. The goals seemed pretty high too, and they were calculated pretty oddly. Order size was based on projected revenue of business annually,

Recruiter reached out through LinkedIn to schedule interview. Quick introduction call with recruiter and then a 1 hour pair programming call with a front end developer a few days later. Programming part was to fix a prebuilt broken todo list using Vanilla JS. There were two bugs you’ll need to fix and once complete you’ll need to add a few new features to the todo list. The interviewer was nice but a bit robotic and wasn’t familiar with the day to day tasks of a DT which made it tough to ask questions about the role at the end of the interview. Felt like it was one of their first times interviewing which made it a bit awkward but overall still a pretty fun interview. Got through most of the fixes but still received a generic rejection email couple days later.

Interview process was quick, concise, and exactly what was described during the recruiting process. Started with a phone screen with recruiter, then phone (video) screen with hiring manager, and then a ~3 hour panel interview. The panel interview was focused on STAR method and was broken into parts with 1 part being with potential peers and the other part (2 hours) with the hiring manager and 2 other peers of the hiring manager.
