Entrevista

Entrevista

I had a phone interview with MuleSoft. It was a relatively simple one, where I presented myself and talked about my experience. Afterwards, they set an interview with Karat, a company that arranges exams for them. You talk with a person of Karat in a conversation about 1 hour, where 15 minutes are used for presenting yourself and telling about work you did (all this they suppose is your confort zone) and 45 minutes of solving an exercise online. The persone from Karat and you have access to a shared window where you solve this coding exercise. I did it very poorly, as the environment and the exercise type was completely a surprise for me. And, very important, I didn't study prior to the exam. Afterwards, they give you automatically the option of asking for a re-do. They say that even though the re-do does not "erase" the results of the first exam, this re-do is much more taken into account than the first one. So I studied for this second one and did great. Even the person from Karat said it. In less than the expected time, finished the exercise, tested it with some default example, and also had time to do a complexity analysis. Didn't got any response for weeks. After I sent a mail, from MuleSoft they told me that they decided to not continue with the process due to the results from the exams. After I asked for it really gently, they agreed to gave me the results: 10/100 and 30/100. The first one doesn't sound really logic. Anyway, the second one sound like a mistake: the only way I could understand that grade is having 2 or 3 tests failed, such that they are 35 points worth each. That doesn't make any sense in an exam of 45, where you barely have time to check your answer with some simple examples. After I told them that maybe there was a mistake, didn't got any answer. A completely waste of time, avoid it if you can.

Entrevista

After a weird phone screen with a third party company that specializes on interviews, they sent me a "noreply" email saying, among other things: "your skillset is not a strong enough match to proceed at this time". What bothers me is that they refer to my skillset, not my performance on this particular interview. I wasn't interviewing for a specific role and the interview was just generic coding problems, so my skillset refers to my skills as a Software Engineer.. Am I not a match for a Software Engineer position? This is just a matter of language but it's important because it changes completely the messageand is very discouraging for people getting started or struggling to get a job!! It's okay to fail, I also failed Expedia and Snowflake at the same time and it's fine. But then I passed the phone/online screens of Zulily, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon and ended up lading a job with Microsoft. But sure, Mulesoft is the authority to tell me I'm not good enough for a Software Engineer position (at this time, I guess I can't work yet). As a side note, It's interesting how people pass interviews at bigger companies and fail at smaller companies, my friends had the same situation. Btw, the interview was done by a third party, is this people working as a full time interviewers? Can they code or they just go around judging others? Anyways, if you get discouraging feedback, keep preparing and applying to other places, no one has the authority to judge you as an engineer.

Interviewing with MuleSoft is a great experience! They hire people very carefully and also show a lot of respect to candidates throughout the whole process. Interviewers valued not only technical skills, but also personality and potential. The conversation with the interviewer was encouraging and heartening. What I sensed from the interviews is that this company really cares about people and talent developments. Besides, my recruiter, Lefan Chi, was very responsive and supportive. Her pure energy and passion throughout the process made working with her a joy. It’s always touching and encouraging while seeing people put their hearts toward their jobs and care people and coworkers around them. It's my pleasure to have the chance to work with the great team. I am very excited to join this company this summer!

On campus interview. Talk about resume projects and intern first. Then did an algorithm coding on paper about linked list. There were also some basic java questions, like the difference between hashmap and hashset.

This was a waste of time for the candidate. They conduct their initial tech screen through a third party (karat), which I passed. If you are deemed good enough based on that, THEN you get the opportunity to speak with the recruiter, who would then go over your resume and background with you. After this, then they decide if you are worthy of pursuing for next steps, which also sound time consuming based on other interviews posts. Anyway, the recruiter contacted me later saying that they had not decided to continue with me. Why make me go through a technical screening, especially with a third party, if you are going to reject me based on my resume, when I was initially extended the screening based on (presumably) my resume? Have some decency to respect the applicants and their time. I've been interviewing with a LOT of companies (20+) in the past month and Mulesoft is the first and only company where I have felt disrespected by for the whole process (this wasn't the only company that used Karat - others were more courteous at least). Needless to say, I don't think I will ever apply here again during the rest of my career, and discourage my peers from doing so as well. Seriously. Show some respect. From beginning to the end, Mulesoft has left a very sour taste in my mind. Would not want to work for them, and would be very against my company (whichever it may be in the future) using them based on how they operate.

Disrespected to the candidates. They won't talk to you unless you pass a third party coding tests. I wrote bug free code and passed test for two questions. But I guess there is a third questions you will have to answer otherwise you are not qualified for the HR to see your resume and talk with you.

Personally, it was the biggest waste of my time, and a despicable interview process. If you're reading this, save yourself some misery and turn away from this company. It was the typical format: 1) Recruiter screening 2) Technical screening 3) Onsite The technical screening uses Karat to test you, and the question, as mentioned in previous posts, is not too challenging. When going to the onsite, this is where things got strange. The first round was a coding challenge where the interviewer spent most of his time on his laptop or on his phone. He was unhelpful, and it was completely unprofessional, but of course I can't just say that. I was just given the problem, without much context, and told to figure it out. The next round was behavioral, just some guy taking notes while you talk about your background. The last round was a system design question where the interviewer is just grilling you with questions until you can't figure out how to do something. It is at this point where he seems to have made up his mind on you. Again, this person will be on his cell phone while you sweat out how to do something on the whiteboard. I think if I were to answer my previous questions a little bit slower, then I would have passed. Probably the worst part is scheduling interviews with the recruiter. The recruiter had an attitude that I had to put up with, and is very very unresponsive. I really liked the company product coming in, but everything about this interview process makes me very angry looking back. To summarize, turn the other way and don't look back.
