Entrevista

Interview process is very long, but most of that is due to the time it takes to prepare for the case portion of the interviews. Recruiters are very transparent and everyone goes through essentially the same process: 1. phone call with HR (mine had no questions just prepped me for what's to come) 2. required practice case with an alum 3. phone case (no personal questions just a case) 4. official first round - two interviews, one hour each, each interview was half case, have behavioral 5. second and final round - same structure as first round but 3 separate interviews Process takes a long time if you have never done a case before but the cases themselves are not super challenging if you have prepared. They are interviewer led which makes it easier and the math is not terribly difficult (i asked the partner if i should round and instead the partner just gave me the answer) Make sure you say the "so what" of the numbers and never just state the answer, say why it's important.

Preguntas de entrevistas
  • The behavioral questions are on their website, they are very transparent. In my first round I got an inclusive leadership question and personal impact. In my second round I didn't get entrepreneurial drive, I got: tell me a time you dealt with a conflict with someone tell me a time you had a project that was really challenging with a tight timeline that you are proud of tell me about a time you exhibited inclusive leadership You will be asked one per interview, and will be asked questions as you go. It's more of a discussion than an interview.

Incredibly long interview process, be prepared for it to take two to three months. The firm provides lots of support throughout the interview process, including a mentor who will run practice cases with you Watch webinars and do your research!

The cases were relatively straightforward and the company provided lots of internal support for preparation for candidates applying from "industry" rather than university or graduate programs. Interviewers were incredibly open and kind and seemed excited to be welcoming new candidates.

The process was rigorous and well managed. Multiple rounds of interviews with feedback in between. McKinsey is a difficult place to work and the purpose of the interview process is to ensure our team members can be successful.

Two rounds of two interviews. Each one including a personal question (describe a situation when you diplayed Leadership etc.) and a business case. Business cases are quite difficult and are structured in three part: 1) define a framework to address a problem (i.e. Decision tree) 2) quantitative section: calculating and analysing some charts (i.e. Sales, Profits or Revenues) 3) Conceptual section: illustrating some creative ideas to address a problem

Relatively straight-forward and simple process, but did take quite a while from initiation until completion. There were effectively 3 key rounds as is called. 0. Initial phone discussion and screening 1. McKinsey's Problem Solving Test (PST) 2. First Round (2x 1:1 interviews with folks within Implementation Group, either Implementation Leads or Sr Implementation Leads) 3. Second Round (2x 1:1 interviews with partners, possibly from the Implementation Group) Although it's interviews for an implementation role, do not expect all case studies to be related purely to operations. Below are some examples of the case studies I was presented: - market sizing and channel optimization for a consumer goods distribution network - maintenance cost optimization for a manufacturer - market price optimization & sizing for telco - logistics transportation business case Overall, enjoyable cases and had fun doing them with the interviewers. Key pieces of advice is not to get bogged down by too many frameworks, but keep them in the back of your mind when needing to draw upon ideas or to ensure you've thought through something comprehensively exhaustive. Key thing to remember is the basics of consulting around structure and MECE. Take time to structure your approach and your summary. No difficult mathematics is involved, very simple exercises - what matters most is being able to be structured and keeping track of the flow either on paper or in your mind. Overall, just try to enjoy the process and do take time to refer to some of the case examples on McK's website.

Preguntas de entrevistas
  • Besides the case studies, there is also the personal experience / fit questions - which are relatively easy and straight-forward - such as: - biggest accomplishment / moment in career - time you faced challenging situation / role - time you faced conflict & how you managed it - time you managed a situation of push-back / resistance

My experience with the interview process aligned very closely with everything that is widely published online. I applied online through McKinsey's website, and was contacted by a recruiter a few days later. The recruitment process was as follows: - 45 minute phone call with recruiter to discuss the role, interview process, my resume and experiences - 60 minute non-evaluative case study coaching session with a McKinsey alumna via phone - 30 minute evaluative case study session via phone - 60 minute phone call with current McKinsey employee in similar role for Q&A, and non-evaluative case study - Round 1: Two 1:1 hour long interviews. Each consisted of 20 minutes of PEI (Personal Experience Interview) and 30 minutes of a case study - Round 2: Same as Round 1, but with more senior level McK employees. All in all, I found the interview process to be very lengthy, and somewhat rigorous. However, the entire process was explained up front, and communication from from The Firm was prompt and courteous. They did a good job of working around my schedule, being that I am currently employed. I spent some time researching McK and the interview process online, and everything matched my experiences very closely. Implementation Coach roles go through the same interview process as a generalist - so you need to be able to structure problems, quantify word problems and synthesize your findings. The PEI really focuses on deep soft skills - specific conversations, specific questions and decision making / influencing based on people skills, less on data. The interview process took 10+ weeks, but this was communicated up front. Difficult interview, fun and fair process. Do not memorize frameworks, but instead learn how to structure a problem.

Preguntas de entrevistas
  • The evaluative portions of the interview included three case studies ranging from manufacturing and production, to IT related profitability problems. PEI included questions related to the most challenging work situation you've been in.

Applied online and was contacted by a recruiter a few weeks later. Overall process is HR Screen --> Practice Phone Case --> Actual Phone Case --> In Person Round 1 --> In Person Day 2. After the initial screener to make sure you're a fit for the position and vice versa, I was scheduled for the first round of phone interviews. A quick aside, I was told that the interview process is the same exact process as the standard Consulting process, so this is probably all one in the same. Anyway, the first step was a phone case interview with a McK alum that also comes with 1 on 1 practice phoner if you can schedule it before the actual interview - I highly recommend this as it was very helpful to get a feel for the questions that will be asked, the style in which they will be asked, and an actual person to talk to you about the responses that are expected. Both the practice and actual cases were pretty standard to what you can find in the online resources...not terribly difficult, a mix of 4 or so questions with 3 qualitative and 1 math (there may also be small math parts mixed into the qual sections, but nothing major). All the qualitative questions were pretty easy and answered at a high level...ways to reduce costs, increase revenue, target specific markets, risk mgmt, etc. Math question was pretty easy...if they ask you to estimate any numbers yourself (population sizes, total revenues, etc), try to make them easy round numbers to work with. Otherwise the math is high school level in difficulty, just be prepared to clearly walk your interviewer through your logic. The in person days are conducted once per month and are full days with a mix of case, behavioral and fit interviews with several consultants throughout. Obviously the big downside to this whole process is it's longevity...especially for those of us who are currently working full time, making time to fit in all of these rounds is not easy. One last point to make...call me crazy or sour grapes if you want, but I got the impression that it's much more difficult to land a McK gig without a top 20 MBA behind your name. Even with a well known and respected b-school MBA, I feel like I was expected to almost be overqualified if I expected to get a 2nd look without having a Wharton or Stanford alum status. I may be completely wrong, but my word to the wise would be to prepare two-fold if you're in the same boat.

The McKinsey interview process included a case interview coaching session as well as a case interview, and problem solving interview. I would recommend making yourself available for the case coaching session as it gives your some necessary shortcuts to answer questions in an efficient manner.
