      Entrevista

Since I already worked for GDB, the process was easy for me. The organization almost always hires within the organization, although the internal candidates are OFTEN way less qualified and knowledgeable than others coming from other dog training background. GDB prefers to keep their employees inept in the field, to keep them around and to model their outdated training practices. I have personally witnessed MANY qualified applicants turned away because they already had a very solid dog training background, but since it didn't correlate with GDB's aniquited philosophy, they were passed on. Its a real loss for the organization.

Me postulé en línea. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Guide Dogs for the Blind (San Rafael, CA) en nov 2022

      Entrevista

One hour Zoom call with HR and a one hour interview on-site with the HOD and another mobility instructor. I was also asked to demonstrate a training game with a dog. I did not get the job or a third interview and HR told me it was because they gave it to an internal candidate: one of 'our people'. After 5 years volunteering it was hard to hear that they don't consider me one of 'their people'. I was also told that my lack of comfort with using aversive training methods on dogs was a factor in the decision.

Was I comfortable with their training methods including Positive Punishment and Negative Reinforcement?

Thank you for your feedback on the interview process for the Apprentice Instructor role. We’re sorry to hear that you had a negative experience through the process and appreciate your feedback. As we consider internal and external candidates, the process can sometimes be lengthy with a high volume of applicants. Our staff, volunteers, clients, and donors are all part of the GDB community and valued as such; we couldn’t move our mission forward without each of you. It appears that this role was filled by a current staff member. GDB’s training philosophy is positive reinforcement based. We strive to maximize positive reinforcement, and our training program is always evolving as research and practices progress. We thank you for your time and interest in this role, and contributions to the organization as a volunteer.
