      Entrevista

I participated in two interviews for a senior editor position with SJR in Toronto -- the first with the hiring managers, and the second with several team members. The interviews went well, the interviewees seemed engaged, and after the second interview, I was asked for my salary expectations. I provided that information, and was then ghosted. I followed up with the director of people and culture after two weeks of silence, to no response. I then followed up again after another two weeks of silence, when I saw the position had been reposted. I finally received a form response that had clearly been copy and pasted, that they were moving forward with someone else. After taking the time to prepare and participate in two interviews, being ghosted for weeks, then receiving a form response with no personalization reflects a lack of consideration for interview candidates.

Me postulé a través de una recomendación de un empleado. El proceso tomó 4 semanas. Acudí a una entrevista en Group SJR (New York, NY)

      Entrevista

Referred by someone. Submitted resume. A recruiter scheduled a phone interview with 3 different people. I ended up only speaking with one of the people -- and for about 15 minutes, max. It was incredibly casual and easy, without the faintest whiff of a "formal" interview. Then was asked to come into the office to meet with Mitch Stoller. Was promised I'd meet briefly with 2 other people -- that didn't happen. Meeting with Mitch was the reason I didn't accept this job. It was such a turnoff. I get the idea of an eccentric leader, but this guy was something else. He's incredibly conservative and lets that be known. Some of the questions were just...weird. I was so uncomfortable the entire time. When he wasn't telling me how genius he was for forming the company, he was spouting off about his beliefs (that are not factually based) about the government. I was offered a position soon thereafter, having never spoken with anyone about the specifics of the job. If that's not a giant RED FLAG, I don't know what is. Everything about the process felt "off" - it was such an easy interview process, the salary was generous, everyone seemed "nice" but not particularly informed about specifics. In the time since my interview, I've learned a lot more about the specifics. It's a mess, Mitch is a terrible manager (but no one pushes back on him), the freedom they claim in the interview process doesn't bear out in day-to-day life, there's been a lot of recent layoffs, dysfunction, disorganization...I could go on, but I'm sure a current (or former) employee has more valuable insight on all that. The Glassdoor reviews were incredibly helpful to me in deciding to avoid this sinking ship - hopefully they help you, too!
